It can be difficult to talk directly about any issues or feelings; this form of psychotherapy offers an alternative way of communicating that may be easier or more appropriate for some people.

Sometimes words are not enough or they may get in the way of the felt emotions. Being able to use images and words together is very powerful and effective in helping a person express themselves.

Using art materials helps the individual access the unconscious mind and thoughts.

The physical movement and experience of art making in therapy helps to connect both the thinking brain(neocortex) and emotional brain(amygdala, Limbic system), along with the left (analytical & logical)brain and the right(artistic & creative) brain; encouraging simultaneous healing of the mind and body.

Because of this, the image produced in Art Therapy is closely linked to emotions, feelings and actions, giving valuable unconscious material and information for the basis of this specialist therapy.

Art Psychotherapy(Art Therapy) can either be directive, non-directive, psychodynamic, analytical and/or person-centred. Therapy sessions are guided by you as the client, you may also be given direction or themes; this will depend on each individual person.

Art therapy may be carried out on an individual basis or in small groups. Please note I now offer both face to face and online sessions.

In Art Therapy sessions you will be encouraged to talk about your images, as this helps an individual to discover insight, meanings, and a deeper understanding, leading to personal growth.

You may be asked to use your image to freely associate thoughts or feelings that come spontaneously to your mind, talking about your own experiences may be easier when doing it through the artwork.

Using a variety of media and materials is extremely satisfying and exploratory; it may create a new sense of freedom and emotional release, reopening up those past experiences and feelings in a safe and non-judgmental environment.

It includes using paints, crayons, felts, fabrics, glue and much more…including the use of the therapeutic ‘clay field’ work or ‘Sand Tray’ where models, figures and images become symbolic of your personal story and life.

All art work and images will be kept safe and secure. The content of sessions and art will remain confidential (Your therapist will discuss the limitations of this with you).

As a client, you do not need to have any previous experience, expertise or even an interest in Art.

Art therapy or Art Psychotherapy is not an art lesson or recreational activity. It must be delivered by a qualified and registered professional adhering to strict guidelines.

Many people find huge benefits from using art creatively for healing purposes in everyday life and social activities, such colouring books, sketch, painting and crafting etc.; Many therapists also use creative techniques, different art media and resources in their therapeutic sessions effectively and to the benefit of their clients, however, please be aware these are NOT Art therapy or Art Psychotherapy sessions.  (Always check that your Art Therapist is trained and qualified at Masters degree level in Art Psychotherapy and is registered with HCPC), before claiming to be delivering Art therapy to you as their client.
