What is Hypnosis?
Hypnosis is a natural and normal state of the mind, in which the body seemingly experiences a state of deep physical relaxation, while the mind remains clear, alert and focused (you are NOT asleep). In this altered state of awareness, the unconscious/subconscious mind is open and suggestible. …a state of mental and physical relaxation, with a heightened sense of awareness which allows the unconscious and conscious mind to communicate.
FACT, we do this naturally about 120 times a day!
- Ever got really engrossed in a book… when you are there… in the story?
- Ever watched TV and notice that your mind drifts to something completely different whilst you were still watching the screen?
- Ever carried out every day familiar actions such as a hobby or making a cup of tea and not been aware of actually how you have completed the task?
- Ever driven somewhere to find that once you arrive you can’t remember a roundabout, traffic lights or turning on your way there?
Hypnosis can be brought about by oneself (self-hypnosis) or with the help of another person. If the other person is a trained professional who uses the state to encourage positive changes to occur, the process is referred to as “Hypnotherapy”.
What is Hypnotherapy ?
Hypnotherapy is when another trained and qualified person helps you to achieve this state of mind in order to treat emotional, psychological disorders, unwanted habits and undesirable feelings.
In other words the aim of hypnotherapy is to assist people to find meaningful alternatives to their present unsatisfactory ways of thinking, feeling or behaving. Therapy also helps clients to become more accepting of themselves and others too. Consequently it can be useful in promoting personal development and unlocking a persons potential.
Quite often children, adolescents, young people and also adults can have:
Motivational issues,
Aggression &/or Attention issues.
Anxieties, confusions and stresses.
Attachment or separation difficulties.
Difficulties that prevent them from coping, with their thoughts and feelings.
Many who suffer from these issues may find it difficult to talk to or interact with others.
Others may just find it hard to relax, switch off or experience negative consequences in their life.
Psychotherapy, Hypnotherapy and Counselling offer fantastic results in changing these unwanted and debilitating behaviours.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can anyone be hypnotised?
The answer is simple, YES; The easier a person is able to concentrate, focus and be open-minded, the easier it is for them to go into the hypnotic trance. Above all, the person must be willing. No one can hypnotise you if you don’t want to be hypnotised, as your natural defences in your mind will prevent this from happening. When you come to Lottie Wright at ‘Life’s Visions’ for Clinical Hypnotherapy all you need to do is to be able to follow the instructions of the professional Hypnotherapist, relax and enjoy.
How can I tell when I’m hypnotised?
It depends on each individual person. Some people are more aware of the changes they feel in their bodies. It also depends on how deep into the hypnotic state the person has allowed themselves to drift into. You may experience sensations of feeling very light or floating, along with light feelings in your arms or legs; you may also feel heavy and sinking into the comfort of the chair, both being lovely and relaxing.
Hypnotherapy will help equip you with new automatic positive thoughts, feelings, emotions, behaviours and actions. The word automatic is the key here; the changes will be effortless, simple and natural. You will step back into a new improved but happier way of thinking.
How does a skilled professional put someone into Hypnosis?
All hypnosis is self-hypnosis. The hypnotherapist is the person guiding and directing you into the hypnotic state. We will use certain words and phrases the unconscious mind understands, as well as using various techniques like deep breathing, imagery, plus a slow and gentle tone of voice.
Is Hypnosis dangerous?
No, in the hands of a skilled professional Hypnotherapist, hypnosis is not dangerous. The unconscious mind has natural defences built in which will automatically reject any suggestions it deems harmful.
Will I lose control or be controlled when I’m under Clinical Hypnosis / Hypnotherapy?
Unfortunately this is a common misconception; some people, professionals who are not fully trained in Hypnosis/Hypnotherapy, or those who link it to the trickery of stage hypnotism may all lead you to belief this. But it’s WRONG!
The truth is… No, you will not lose control while you are in Hypnosis. You are fully conscious and very aware of what is being suggested or directed.
As in everyday life’s interactions and therapy there is always an increase and element of suggestibility and susceptibility, and just like other therapeutic modalities, you are always in full control and the unconscious mind will immediately and automatically reject any undesired and unwanted suggestions.
Does the professional Hypnotherapist have any special “powers”?
Absolutely not! We cannot make you do anything against your will. A skilled Clinical Hypnotherapist is just an ordinary person like you. They simply have special training, continuous assessments and supervision, to learn how to speak directly to your unconscious mind in a way it understands. Anyone with the same training, qualifications and supervision can learn to safely Hypnotise for therapy and personal improvement.
Who can benefit from Hypnotherapy?
Virtually everyone is the answer!
Using hypnotherapy is about using our own minds, without the use of drugs, surgery or any other physically invasive action, to help change our lives for the better.
It is important to discuss any medical needs with a qualified doctor and medical specialist and disclose these to your Clinical Hypnotherapist before every session. It should not be used as an alternative to medical treatment. Hypnotherapy should be considered complementary to treatment a person may already be receiving from medical practitioners.
